Content updates

Practical Law Commercial have released a brand new resource, see Legal update: archive, New .au direct domain names registrable from 24 March 2022. Australians will be able to register a new, shorter category of domain name, .au direct names, from 24 March 2022 through participating auDA-accredited registrars.

The .au direct names are shorter simpler domain names, for example, thomsonreuters.au or mybusiness.au, which will complement the existing suit of Australian namespaces. When the .au direct namespace launches, registrants of an existing domain name in the .au country code can apply for the exact match of their existing domain name. These names will be allocated according to the priority allocation process set out in the .au Domain Administration Rules: .au Direct Priority Implementation (Priority Rules). New registrants will be able to apply for a new .au direct name that is not already registered in any existing .au domain namespace such as com.au, net.au or org.au in accordance with the .au Domain Administration Rules: Licensing (Licensing Rules). This resource includes information about who can apply for the new category of domain names, where to apply and the priority allocation process for registering an exact match of an existing domain name in the .au country code.
