On 29 September 2021, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS) released its highly anticipated Advisory Report on the Security Legislation Amendment (Critical Infrastructure) Bill 2020 and the Statutory Review of the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018 (Report).

Legal update, Critical Infrastructure Bill: Parliamentary Joint Committee on Security and Intelligence recommends splitting legislation to combat looming threat of cyberattacks provides a brief overview of the background of the joint review conducted by the PJCIS into the Critical Infrastructure Bill 2020 (Cth) and the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018 (Cth) and outlines the fourteen recommendations of the Report. The Report highlights the need for both a "swift and comprehensive response" in regard to securing Australia's critical infrastructure on the basis of compelling evidence regarding the looming threat of cyberattacks.  In view of the many unresolved issues with the Critical Infrastructure Bill, the Report recommends splitting the proposed legislation into two Bills on the basis that a swift and comprehensive response cannot be achieved in the one piece of legislation.
